Irvington Neighborhood – Your New Home

Irvington is a historic NE Portland community that lies close to the I-84 and I-5 freeways making this a popular area for commuters. The neighborhood traces its history to the William and Elizabeth Irving Donation Land Claim of 1851 as well as several small adjoining subdivisions.  The neighborhood streets were laid out in 1887, and residential lots began selling in 1891.

An early example of a streetcar suburb, Irvington contains the largest, most diverse, and intact collections of Queen Anne, Arts and Crafts, and Colonial Revival style residences in the City of Portland as well as the State of Oregon. In 2010, Irvington was designated a historic district and added to the National Register of Historic Places. Some of the more beautiful turn of the century homes are located here on quiet, tree-lined streets.

This popular neighborhood is a contrast of sorts. On the south side, there are some very nice, cool stores, restaurants and coffee houses mixed in with some not so upscale shopping. On the northern end, is the residential section, with just a small selection of nicer stores thrown in. Many of the homes here are on the National Register of Historic Places and very well maintained making it a sought after place to live.

You can walk to the MAX from certain parts of this neighborhood. It is also possible to walk to the Convention Center and the Lloyd Center. The Lloyd Center is a huge mall with all the stores you would expect. It also has two huge Loews movie cineplexes that show all of the newest films. On Broadway there are a wide variety of boutiques, restaurants and bars. There is a popular vegan restaurant called, “Blossoming Lotus Cafe” in Irvington.

Not only is Irvington close to the freeways, but also there is easy accessibility to public transportation, downtown and the Pearl District. If you are an avid walker, you will find Irvington a walking friendly community especially through the parks in the area as well as through the older residential areas with nice, wide sidewalks. Irvington Park is about 16 acres and has a special off-leash dog park as well as a wading pool and playground. Throughout the area, you will find really pretty trees. In fact, there is a tour called Irvington Classic Homes and Heritage Trees that explains all the historically significant parts of this area.

Irvington is a perfect place to live if you want to experience that old, hometown feeling of years gone by.
