Irvington Neighborhood – Your New Home

Irvington is a historic NE Portland community that lies close to the I-84 and I-5 freeways making this a popular area for commuters. The neighborhood traces its history to the William and Elizabeth Irving Donation Land Claim of 1851 as well as several small adjoining subdivisions.  The neighborhood streets were laid out in 1887, and residential lots began selling in 1891.

With an early history as a streetcar suburb, Irvington is now home to some of the most magnificent turn-of-the-century homes in all of Oregon. Colossal Queen Anne residences peacefully coexist with cozy Colonial Revival dwellings on peaceful tree-lined streets; all celebrated when it was designated a historic district and added to the National Register of Historic Places back in 2010.

This popular neighborhood is a contrast of sorts. On the south side, there are some very nice, cool stores, restaurants and coffee houses mixed in with some not-so-upscale shopping. On the northern end, is the residential section, with just a small selection of nicer stores thrown in. Many of the homes here are on the National Register of Historic Places and very well maintained making it a sought-after place to live.

You can walk to the MAX from certain parts of this neighborhood. It is also possible to walk to the Convention Center and the Lloyd Center. The Lloyd Center is a huge mall with all the stores you would expect. It also has two huge Loews movie cineplexes that show all of the newest films. On Broadway, there are a wide variety of boutiques, restaurants and bars. There is a popular vegan restaurant called, “Blossoming Lotus Cafe” in Irvington.

Irvington is a very accessible community, situated close to the freeways and public transit. With plenty of parks like Irvington Park that offer amenities such as an off-leash dog park and wading pool, it’s no wonder so many people choose to take advantage of walking here in all its beauty! You can even enjoy a tour through this area designed around historically significant homes and magnificent heritage trees – making your outdoor experience one you won’t soon forget.

Irvington is a perfect place to live if you want to experience that old, hometown feeling of years gone by.
