Overlook is an exciting North Portland neighborhood just a stone’s throw from the Willamette River. Conveniently located at Arbor Lodge and University Park, Overlook offers quick access into downtown Portland in only 15-20 minutes – or grab the MAX line for an even faster trip! The nearby Mississippi Avenue district hosts all sorts of experiences – live entertainment venues, unique restaurants and bars, as well as artsy stores galore highlight this happening area of town.
Part of the neighborhood also includes Swan Island, which used to be a separate island but was long ago connected with landfill, making it part of the mainland. The Swan Island area of Overlook is now a manufacturing area with a decidedly industrial feel.
You can find a variety of neighborhoods in Overlook including Victorians and bungalows. This is definitely an up-and-coming area. However, you can still find very affordable homes. The streets are very cute and relaxing, as you will see various people exercising, walking their dogs and gardening.
Overlook is a culturally vibrant neighborhood with deep Polish roots, evident in its annual festival and charming library. Families flock to the pleasingly sized Overlook Park for quality time or picnics — but there are plenty of other green spaces nearby too! For those wanting an even deeper cultural experience while still staying close by home, head over to historic Overlook House community center where you’ll find locals enjoying restaurants and each others’ company in this safe yet lively hub. Plus commuting downtown just got easier thanks MAX light rail stations situated within walking distance from most homes here.

This site has been in use since the 1960s when two families started a garden on unused city land. They hired a farmer to plow the site each spring. By the 1980s, the garden was so well tended that it won a national contest and was featured on the Victory Garden show on public television. To this day, this garden remains an icon of community development in northeast Portland. - Pittman Addition HydroPark
This open space includes picnic tables and benches made from recycled materials. The site was covered in invasive plants, and community members have planted lots of natives to try to create urban wildlife habitat. There is an active committee of community members and artists working to bring temporary art to the park on a rotating basis.
