Parkrose Heights Neigborhood

Descriptions

Parkrose Heights is a Northeast Portland residential haven, tucked away just south and east of I-84. With its close proximity to PDX Airport (and the local amenities it offers), combined with major thoroughfares that make commuting easy – this tranquil neighborhood has something for everyone. Don’t get confused between Parkrose Height & Parkroses though – they are two very different places!

There are lots of local restaurants and stores, residents are close to the shopping center that is across the street from the airport. Here you have every chain, including IKEA, Best Buy and Target. Public transportation is good and can take you right into downtown.

There are some green areas in Parkrose Heights including Knott Street Park, Senn’s Community Garden and Senn’s Dairy Park. Knott Park is about 12 acres and has a playground and some nice open spaces. It is popular among families. Most of the neighborhood’s businesses are located along Halsey Street, the southern boundary. There’s also a hospital in the southwest corner of the neighborhood (Vibra Specialty Hospital of Portland).

Parkrose Heights is a cozy, family-oriented neighborhood that caters to folks of all stages in life. From young families to retirees living out their golden years at one of the two locally situated nursing homes – Parkrose Heights has something for everyone! And with its 1950s and 1960s style houses it’s no wonder these residents stay here so long; who wouldn’t want an abode oozing such vintage charm?

Beach Community Garden
This site has been in use since the 1960s when two families started a garden on unused city land. They hired a farmer to plow the site each spring. By the 1980s, the garden was so well tended that it won a national contest and was featured on the Victory Garden show on public television. To this day, this garden remains an icon of community development in northeast Portland.

Pittman Addition HydroPark
This open space includes picnic tables and benches made from recycled materials. The site was covered in invasive plants, and community members have planted lots of natives to try to create urban wildlife habitat. There is an active committee of community members and artists working to bring temporary art to the park on a rotating basis.
